‘Highland Gardens’ turns into ‘The L.A. Complex’

A freshman Canadian drama will get a supersized midseason debut this January, according to a release sent out by MuchMusic and Bell Media Friday afternoon.

The L.A. Complex, formerly known as Highland Gardens, will make its debut on Much and CTV Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 9 p.m. ET, with the episode “Down in L.A.” before continuing in its permanent Tuesday night timeslot exclusively on MuchMusic.

The series revolves around a group of six aspiring actors who move into the same seedy hotel complex in Los Angeles, and is based on a similar, shady location that notoriously houses wannabe actors, directors and producers for short stays near Hollywood and Highland in L.A.

The L.A. Complex hails from Epitome Pictures, the same company behind Instant Star and Degrassi: The Next Generation.

According to executive producer Martin Gero, the series pushes “the envelope of what kind of stories you can tell on TV. We’re thrilled with the outcome of the first season and are excited we’ve been given a chance to tell such a rich and diverse character drama.”

Complex stars Degrassi alum Cassie Steele in the lead role of Abby, a Toronto native who hits rock bottom before finding companionship with her fellow residents.

The series also stars Andra Fuller (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Jonathan Patrick Moore (All Saints), Joe Dinicol (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Chelan Simmons (Supernatural), Benjamin Charles Watson (The Listener) and Jewel Staite (FlashForward).

There are no American broadcasters attached to the Canadian project.

In 2004 Steve Markle released the documentary Camp Hollywood, which was also based on the real Highland Gardens. It featured the likes of Maury Chaykin, Polly Shannon, Saul Rubinek, Ryan Belleville, Malin Akerman and other Canadian actors and actresses who once called the legendary Hollywood hotel home.

Happy 22nd Birthday Cassie!

Happy 22nd Birthday to the most amazing girl on the planet. She has shown us so much of her talent from Degrassi to her music to even staring in other movies/tv shows such as Instant Stars, My Babysitter’s a Vampire, The Best Years, Full Court Miracle,Doc and Super Sweet 16: The Movie. She will even be gracing us with her present on TV yet again when they air her new show Highland Gardens. Let’s make her 22nd birthday a memorable one so leave comments for Cassie and she might just see them! I am not promising anything though! The above banner was made by Adam over at Degrassi Junkie. I just didn’t want to make one and not be satisfied with it.

UPDATE: Cassie just tweet us and thank us for the birthday shoutout via twitter. Just shows that she does look at the site. Therefore send comments and she will most likely see them!
